Mentality Says

Recently, we underwent one of the worst attacks that DALnet has *ever* incurred. At one point it wasn't actually possible to connect for the majority of users. Server splits galore, however, we're still here. We're still connected. The majority of users seem to think this is the only time that DALnet has undergone DDoS attacks. It isn't. Two years ago, DALnet had the same sort of attacks, and we were even worse off than now, and yet, we still maintained the status of being the world's largest IRC network.

Why should now be any different? It is true to say, that sadly, we have lost of our largest servers twisted.ma.us.dal.net and its HUB server typhoon.hub.us.dal.net, and we are sad to see it go, however, once again, this is not the first time that DALnet has lost huge servers that supply a great number of users, and STILL maintained it's famous status amongst the IRC network community. We are simply going through a bad patch, and these attackers WILL either 1) Give up and go home - get bored of it, or 2) Get caught out by the law enforcing authorities that are involved (Just like the attack, two years ago - one of the people was put behind bars *smile*). It's simply a matter of time.

But what can WE do, the normal everyday users? I personally think, the best thing we can do is keep coming to DALnet. These attackers want everyone to leave DALnet, they WANT DALnet to crumble. We MUST have faith, and not give up on DALnet. By giving up, and leaving, we are letting them succeed. Yes, it is very hard to connect, but everything that can be done, IS being done, to help this be kept to a minimum. If you try hard enough, you'll get on :)

Another thing I have noticed, is that unfortunately, many users are saying that DALnet administration have been telling them that this is the end of DALnet. All I can say, is I too have got this response from an Oper, and yet, we are still here. They were wrong :). IRCops aren't faultless, and they are not pure fountains of knowledge. Indeed, they have a lot more knowledge of IRC/DALnet than the majority of users, but they can't be certain that DALnet is going to go down. If you look at the evidence, DALnet is more likely to make it through this than not. Like i said, it's all a matter of time.

And in this festive time, I think it's better to keep our hopes up, and our spirits high :) - Don't let this spoil your Christmas/New Years/Hanukah/EID, or any other festival :)

The fat lady is sleeping, and it's gonna take a lot more than this to make her sing.

Regards,

Mentality/Chris - DALnet user.
