Grab a Gadget
by Curve

Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas, or just want to bypass the festive season and pamper yourself? The Zine is the place to find some pretty nifty gadgets that are bound to have you drooling and reaching for your credit cards.

DNA in a tin
Space-age science hits the home with this too cool to be true gadget. The Catgee, DNA in a tin, contains everything you need to collect and store your DNA. That, however, is only where the fun starts. If you then send away your sample to the boffins at Catgee, they will return a full DNA profile and your choice of personalised DNA accessories. Oh yes, your DNA string on a T-shirt or stationery set.
Micro Racers
Quite simply, the smallest radio controlled car in the world. Super-fast and so small you could sit several of them on the palm of your hand. You need never have a boring afternoon at the office again.
Archos Multimedia Jukebox
How cool can one gadget possibly get? This extremely pretty little machine features a colour LED screen, 20Gb in-built memory and the ability to play MP4 and DivX. Not only that, but it's an MP3 player/recorder with video and photo viewing. Just when you'd think that Archos couldn't possibly fit any more functionality into this Jukebox, they go and offer optional plug-in modules that allow you to download from SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards, and another module that turns the unit into a camcorder.
The Soundbug
This is one of those gadgets that make you go "huh?" The Soundbug plugs into standard headphone sockets of audio devices such as MP3 players, CD etc and is smaller than a computer mouse. What does it do? Well it uses natural materials to amplify sound. Use its suction cup to stick it to a window and, hey presto, your window becomes a speaker - allowing people both inside, and out, to hear the music. There's no end of things you could try this on, even little brother's forehead.
Karma Chameleon Phone
When British Telecom featured this phone in an advert, it didn't actually exist as a production model. However, after the deluge of enquiries, it's now available to buy! This phone is as tacky as it gets, but I just love it. When a call comes through, the chameleon will roll his eyes, rear up and start singing that awful Culture Club hit 'Karma Chameleon' - the little bug on the end accompanies on a harmonica and, to cap it all, the chameleon's stomach flashes "red, gold and green". This phone has a kitsch cool factor off the scale!
Sharp GX10
In the words of Leslie Phillips - ding, dong! This is the latest offering in the next generation of mobile phones. A scallop shell mobile, with a huge colour display and polytronic ring tones. It has an in-built camera, and is WAP and MMS compatible. Oh, and there's lots of funky downloadable java games for those bored moments on the train.
Minipod Speakers
These things have graced rooms everywhere from the Truman Show set to Orbital's studio. They're extremely powerful and with that retro 'Jetsons' look that out-cool just about any other speakers around.
