Well Wishes III Compiled by Curve
We've had heaps of messages flood in from all over the place, here are a few reprinted with names taken out to protect the innocent:
---
I have been a faithful user of Dalnet from the first moment I joined the online world, about eight years ago. Your dedication in running and maintaining Dalnet has allowed so many of us to meet and connect with so many wonderful people in this online world that you have changed the lives of many of us permanently.
I cannot tell you how many good friends I have met, first online then in face to face meetings. Many of these people I now count as true and loyal friends.
So you see, you are contributing much more than simply bandwidth and computer savy. You are making this world a smaller and friendlier place, allowing so many of us to broaden our own personal horizons and increasing our enjoyment of this sometimes very frightening world we live in.
I just want to say a grateful 'thank you' from the bottom of my heart. Please keep fighting this attack and bring our community back online. Your efforts are not going un-noticed, nor unappreciated, but I think those of us who make use of Dalnet have a responsibility to ensure that you at Dalnet, realize that your loyal users are behind you 100 percent!!!
---
I started my irc life on Dalnet, and even if I left if two years ago for exactly the reasons that brought you to the present situation, it is for me very sad news. I really hope Dalnet will be able to reborn from his ashes like the Phoenix.
Let me wish good luck to the whole Dalnet staff and users.
---
I know you are working hard, and hope that soon the heartless creeps doing
this are caught. Thanks for all you do on behalf of what is/was dal.net.
---
I am chatting on DAL.Net from 1996 and my nickname is Antalya founder of #Antalya channel. I meet with my wife on DAL.Net. We chat a lot with you also on #lineone channel. And i am really sorry about attacks. I really wish you chance to get these attackers and open our shard. I believe that our server didn't deserve to close.
---
As a long time user of DALnet I would just like to say that I admire the
effort of the staff and members of DALnet to get this network secured and up
again. You are providing a great service to a lot of users who really do
appreciate it and we are truly grateful.
Thanks to everyone and keep on plugging away and we know you will find a
solution to this problem soon.
---
Unfortunately I don't have any information about who and why someone has attacked you so I am sending this letter just to say how good server have you made and that it is the best
server on irc (seriously) . I know that dalnet is not dead and it will never be , I know
that the problem is hard to fix but there has to be some way and its just that we cant figure it out .
---
I would just like to say I've been using DALnet since 1998 and I think it's a crying shame that these criminals have decided to try and take it down. It's pointless and will achieve nothing since DALnet will come back stronger than ever. I married a woman I met on DALnet, without DALnet I would have never met her, so PLEASSSSE stop the attacks and give love and peace a chance!!!!
---
No this isn't another complaint or inquiry into the current troubles facing dalnet. : ) This is more of a keep doing the good work kinda thing and I hope you catch the (insert expletive here) that are causing all the trouble. While I don't 'chat' online very often anymore I have met more then a few very good friends online through Dalnet and for that I am thankful to Dalnet for providing the forum for me to make friends from across the world. So in light of this I wish Dalnet the best of luck not only in catching these criminals but also beyond that when Dalnet gets restored to full health.
---
I miss dalnet and hope you are able to rise above the current
problems and return.
---
I just read your article on DALnet's current problems and I wanted to add my name to list of well wishers and the list of people that hopes DALnet can
get back online sooner rather than later. I am/was a big user of the network
and won't let this temporary disruption keep me from returning.
---
Just a quick comment to let you know that i'm behind dal.net in their
current strife. there is no excuse or justification for ddos...regardless
the motivation. it comes down to children (regardless of actual age) with
nothing better to do.
For my part, I've done what i can to secure my (gov't) network from
participating in such attacks. myself and my security staff will continue
to monitor attempts at exploit and forward any useful info to your exploits
team.
For my part, i'm keeping the faith and look forward to a speedy recovery of
the dal.net network. i know no other irc home.
---
hi this is emiko again, and I just finished reading the current news. i am very hopeful that not only will DALnet become stronger thru this crisis, but will transcend to a better and more stablew situation afterthefact!

Keep up the Good Work and get dal.net backs on it's feet :) It's great that u haven't surrender.
---
I really wish DALnet will be up and running in no time ‘cause I have already started to miss it.
---
THANXxxxx a zillion 4 posting that update..what with all these ridiculous rumours going about, and please take your time to set things straight, so NO infected users can connect, and until then..am staying out of irc..and if DALnet doesn't pull thru...i'll leave irc to others..nothin like home network...keep up the good work. if in need of assistance at any time..locally..lemme know (though am not sure what i can do)
---
I wanted to add my good wishes among the rest for the safe return of Dalnet. back in 1999 I came to dalnet to find a safe place to chat and I found some great friends. You have continually considered the users and their needs and we are all behind you now . Hang in there :) Because you are the best net there is ..
---
Just wanted to give my best wishes to DALnet. As an admin of other networks,
I know how a DDoS feels.
I'm not sure how many of you visit usenet, or if you've read Russ Allbery's
rant. I have many times; some of my staff members claim I obsess over it. I
think it says a lot about what you guys want to do, and what the attackers
are doing to you.
First the beauty:
"Do you know what it's like to see something that you've put your heart and
soul into creating grow and flourish and *become* one of those communities?
What it feels like to give back to someone, someone just discovering the
Internet, those same feelings of wonder and awe and warmth and community and
friendship that you found? To receive, not the welcome random bit of thanks
here and there, but the far deeper and more wonderful knowledge that you've
built and maintained something that people are using and *using* to do
things and see things and think things that they otherwise would never be
able to do or would have no outlet for?..."
And then the beast:
"Do you know what it feels like to know that your news server, despite the
fact that it's some of the best hardware you can get with your available
resources for an application that most people just don't care about, is
running a backlog? That you're dropping incoming articles? That somewhere,
somewhere there are things being posted which you are not receiving? They
could be junk, they could be beautiful, well-expressed pieces of someone's
soul, and you DON'T KNOW, you CAN'T KNOW, because legions of...vandals are
throwing so much CRAP at your news server that it's running flat out trying
to process it and delete it and just can't go any faster?
Let me tell you this: there's a rage in that. There is a cold rage that you
feel at that because...it is not acceptable, it is NOT...ACCEPTABLE for a
single post that is from a person talking to other people to be deleted, to
be dropped on the uncaring floor to make room for machine generated spew. "
The whole thing is amazing; read it here

It's really sad that they attack DALnet. Keep up the good work please. We are behind you.
---
This is a fan email. You don't have to answer. Keep working. Don't let Dalnet die.
---
Just a quick email to say how much most people appreciate DalNet and are very saddened at what has happened. People like myself don't understand a lot of how all the internet works, but I can assure you we honestly appreciate the opportunity that DalNet gives us.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to being able to use DalNet once more to chat with my internet friends.
