Best DALnet Moments V

We had some great entries for the Christmas Competition. Below we've picked out a small selection of the best for your enjoyment. Well done to all who entered, it's so great to know that DALnet has been the catalyst for so many special moments.

Quite some time ago, I stumbled upon the DALnet network by accident while at Culver Military Academy, a boarding school I went to when I was younger. A person had been using mIRC and I was curious to see what it was. I had no real technical knowledge, but it grew on me along with DALnet. Soon enough I was talking with people at random, joining channels and doing it like a pro. It was a very interesting concept in my mind, a small community living and chatting. I moved away from civilization for awhile and left DALnet for quite a few years then came back. I joined a small channel called #korn. I didn't like Korn, but I knew some of the people in there from other channels. I once again built up status on DALnet, and began to know people on a more personal level. I am a dual citizen of Canada and the United States of America, and one of my IRC friends was living in Montreal, Quebec. I went up for a small vacation last winter, and met with a couple that I had met from #korn. While in Montreal I met quite a few people I had seen on IRC, but not exclusively just IRC people. I have been living in Montreal for about 8 months, and this city has really grown on me. I have a job as a programmer now, of course having the immediate response of help rooms progressed my knowledge further in the subject, and everything is great. DALnet has helped me progress in just about every aspect of my life through the friends and knowledge I have shared on IRC.

DALnet is a tool used by so few in the world, I'd think it'd help out so many others if people took the time to learn how to use a simple chat client.

It was back in '96. I had been on the net for 3 years prior and had used other forms of chat programs. I forget how I stumbled on to mIRC and Dalnet. My first two days on Dalnet were interesting to say the least. It didn't take long before I had a couple of women upset with me. One of them had been complaining about her failing marriage. While chatting I found out that she was on irc 6-8 hours a day. I casually mentioned that maybe this was one of the reasons her marriage was failing ... BIG mistake lmao. She told me off and wouldn't talk to me again. Something else happened on day two but I don't remember what it was. I had decided that I don't need this crap and would delete this mIRC program. I'm glad I didn't.

Back then I was using the nick Lumpyone,(Lumpy & Lumpy1 were taken). My nickname at work was Lumpy in reference to the way I make gravy;p so decided to use it on Dalnet. It was Sept. 03/96 and I was sitting in #funfactory placing an asl popup once in awhile, trying to follow along, and getting ready to delete the program. I received a strange message from a nick called Nakita (someone else has it now). All it said was "Hi, I don't want to chat but I just had to ask about your nickname." We ended up chatting for a couple of hours. Finally, something positive about mIRC :)

There was a two hour time difference and two thousand miles between us but that didn't matter. We hit it off, waiting patiently for the other's nick to show in the notify and then chat for hours each day. Ten months later we were able to meet in person. I was nervous but all the butterflies melted away with that first hug. It was like we had always been together. I know a lot of you can relate to this. For three years we did the long distance relationship thing, I would fly out there, she would come down here. We didn't spend as much time on irc once some good long distance telephone plans became available but Dalnet will always be part of our lives.

Sadly we did not end up getting married like some of you have. It was complicated and neither of us was willing to quit our job and move. I still regret that every day. She will always be in my heart and each day I wonder 'what if'.

We still stay in contact by phone, dalnet, email and are really good friends. We shared some amazing times together. I love you Cindy *hugs*
