The Epitome of Dumb Laws
by wshs

Okay, here's the deal. I'm not a professional writer, and never plan on being one. I also do not plan on pretending to be one for duration of this document.

There's this bill, called the American Sovereignty Restoration Act [1], going through the United States Congress. While most people would not even care about the bill, there are points in it which will, for the lack of a better term, screw the world's economy. It starts out with killing the UN treaties and kicking the UN, its members, and its representatives out of the US. Not much damage there to worry about. Next, the bill withdraws any and all funds from the US to the UN and its members. Minimal amount of damage, also. The bill looks to remove the US from all peacekeeping operations. Oh well, war is good for business. But, here comes the interesting part.

Section 6 of the bill essentially switches any ally status with UN member nations to neutral. Let's take a count of UN member nations. According to www.un.org/Overview/unmember.html, that's 190 countries, not including the US. Switching status from ally to neutral on 190 nations, that should be good for the US economy, right? Let's ignore for the moment the fact that the US is the world's largest importer of oil, and second largest exporter, the world's largest importer of fine wines and spirits, or that the EU is the largest importer of things such as US grain. By cutting the ties with UN members, imagine the costs of electronics and vehicle importation.

So far, we've really only gotten half way through the bill. Next few sections remove the US participation in educational, science, cultural organization, and environment programs with the UN. Oil spills? Who cares. Third world countries needing help with advancement, education, and health? Don't ask the US. That is, if the bill passes.

The bill also includes US removal from the World Health Organization, including any finances or research. Not like the AIDS problem in Africa will effect us, right? The famines don't seem to matter much either, it seems.

I am a US citizen, and I do not like this bill. I consider the persons who came up with and (co)sponsored this bill a disgrace to our country, and to the world as a whole. The UN is probably the one thing that keeps the world from falling apart. We need unity more than we need seclusion. I urge US citizens to write their congress members about this bill. That's pretty much the only way to guarantee a bill won't be passed, input from constituents. You can find the addresses of your congress critters on www.house.gov and www.senate.gov, naturally. Citizens of other countries might want to bring this up with their government as well.
