Issue:
Contest: And, we have a winner... thanks to all of you who send it entries.. we got some really intriguing and interesting entries.. Caedfel, who chose a rather original approach by writing a poem. As soon as JavaDoc has an opportunity, he'll update the pic and we'll publish it here and present it to Caedfel. Other poems of his can be found here. Carlton, aka Charles Miller, is an unrepentant IRC geek who lives somewhere in Australia, and (as is obvious from reading this piece) has far too much spare time. His article puts an entirely new slant on Modern Technology and what it might all come to. And, he enjoys receiving comments on his writings. Welcome back, Carlton, check past issues to see more of his work. Thon, aka B. R. Bearden, is usually found on #The_WritersClub and is a frequent contributor to the DALnetizen. He's had several articles and stories published, and has completed his first novel. Anything he writes is worth a read. His contribution this month, "OK Class" is definitely not your typical little story about a classroom situation. Ticker -- new here -- has been on dalnet for 18 months, and wrote the article about copyrights and plagiarism on irc.. actually, the copyright situation on the whole internet is one of those tangled webs that i'd never attempt to decipher. Ticker is an aop on #Cyberparty, and until recently published a small community newspaper where she resides in Nova Scotia, Canada. Per Jorner -- aka Finster aka Coffee Dragon - a frequent contributor, wrote the poem, "Places So Remote You have no reason to believe they exist," His first book has recently been published and is selling quite well in his native Sweden. The Swedish title is "Efter lägereldarna", and the Swedish publisher is Norstedts, Sweden's oldest and one of Sweden's two most prestigious publishing house. The English title will be "After the Campfires". He's seen the cover, which will be a slightly clipped version of the Swedish, and also three lovely illustrations of ten which will apparently be in the book! It's being translated now, and is expected to be on the market in October 99. The English version is being published by Toby Press. We've published his work before, and are delighted to have the opportunity to do so again. Arkhobbit writes a column which is published weekly in the Sherwood Voice, Sherwood, Arkansas, and in this issue we're fortunate to have an article which resulted from a conversation in the #40up-Intellichat channel... prozac and women... they did it to our mothers, now they're doing it to us... some things never change... Kufat -- using mirc, which is the by far the most popular client on DALnet. Good place to start -- and thanks Kufat, for taking on this task. Kufat has been on IRC long enough to pick up some tricks, and can be found in #square or #channel-x most of the time, or ICQ, as 8019911. and from MirclMax, one of the founders of DALnet... some history of DALnet, seen through it's relationship to the channel #StarTrek. I keep nagging people for articles about "the good old days" and was fortunate enough to get this one, which also is our featured Channel for this Issue... Steve van Maanen aka Steve29 or Ikkyu on dalnet..is just this guy...you know? He likes poetry and travel and life... (and Aikido -- planning to study the martial art in Japan. He's worked as a tombstone maker simultaneously working as a flight instructor.. "hey...you know...your landings aren't that good...but I'm going to send you solo anyways...before you go...can I interest you in a tombstone?" Is currently starting his own internet-related business while working full time. The poem "No Knowing" is the first of his work we've published, but he's been published in Burning Sky Magazine.. c`estmoi -- the nick should be familiar if you've read the zine before. A most interesting story, but then his work is usually interesting.. a big on the unusual side, and takes a bit of thought. This one's a sci-fi. Be careful what you write, one never knows when it may show up at the most inopportune time. These people (or assorted creatures) were kind enough to share the fruits of their labours with us -- honor their intellectual property and don't copy without their permission, please. Copyright violation is not a pretty thing.
